Species Diversity Over the long period of time that life has existed on Earth, there have been a number of important or significant innovations including (but not limited to) endosymbiosis to create mitochondria and chloroplasts; multicellularity; adaptation to land by plants and animals development of exoskeletons in arthropods, shells in molluscs, and notochords followed by vertebral columns in chordates and vertebrates; and bipedalism in the ancestry of humans. All of these had to come about by natural selection in response to changing environmental forces. After studying the textbook reading assignment, pick one of these significant innovations and describe: a. How the innovation appears to have happened b. What environmental challenges were met and overcome by this innovation, and c. What opportunities were opened for the organism that made this innovation You must include in your post an example of at least one species and demonstrate that you understand scientific nomenclature by writing the correct binomial of the species name, and showing its hierarchy of classification. a)The innovation mentioned here are evolutionary adaptive response generated due to change in environmental interaction. This was due to the prevalence and selection of survival of the fittest .As the time period between the first appearance of foundation species and the climax species the resources were very limited but the competition was excessive , further the condition were not apt for any life form to flourish. So the species that were more adaptive were able to survive the later stages of development and continue their generation. For example: on the primitive earth the climatic conditions were harsh and chemically unsuitable for life forms as the majority of gases present in the atmosphere were methane, ammonia and hydrogen with traces of other elements as well the temperature conditions were extremely high under such conditions the only life form that was able to flourish were the prokaryotic bacterial cells , these bacterial cells are capable of long term survival due to their long dormancy periods which was an adaptive feature they developed in order to withstand high temperature . Another interesting adaptive feature these bacteria tend to show was anaerobically apt cellular organelle this adaptive response was in turn due to lack of oxygen in the atmosphere during those times thirdly metabolically these bacterial cells tends to have multifunctional molecules with same carbon backbone for maximum conservation of energy.

b) The environmental challenges met by the primitive species were extreme however it also lead to existence of current life forms on earth. For example due to the limited food resources on the primitive earth autotrophic bacterial cells developed which were capable of producing their own food and further modified the climatic conditions and made them more suitable for thr other Life forms to flourish. The evolution of single cellular organisms to multicellular organisms and the adaption of life forms from aquatic to amphibious and ultimately terrestrial and arboreal.

c) The opportunity presented to the organisms were , a better , more apt and resources rich ecosystem an opportunity to form the climax community , assurance of continuation of generation, less competition.
