Question
Activity 1A-2 A standard dorm bedroom at most colleges is 10 ft. wide by 15 ft. long. A bag of regular M&Ms; has approximately 200 candies inside of it and usually costs around 67 cents. How much money would it cost to completely fill a dorm bedroom with regular M&Ms;? 1. Clearly state how you will approach solving this problem. List any assumptions that you would have to make. Also, make an educated guess without any calculations. a. What is your educated guess of how much money it would take to completely fill a dorm bedroom with regular M&Ms;? Do this part without any calculations. b. Actually solve the problem using your assumptions from part a) and any calculations that you feel are necessary. Your answer need only be given to one significant figure c.Explanation / Answer
a. First, we have to assume that each M&M candy is circular with a diameter of say 1 cm. First, we calculate the area of the dorm room and then divide it by area of one candy to get the number of candies required to fill the dorm room. Then we assume that every bag contains exactly 200 candies. So dividing the total number of candies we got above by 200 we get the number of bags of candies needed and multiplying it with the cost of one bag, we will get the total cost.
b. An educated guess would be, say 600 dollars
c. Area of dorm room = 10 ft x 15 ft = 304.8 cm x 457.2 cm = 139354.56 cm2.
Area of one candy = pi r2 = 0.785 cm2
Number of candies needed to cover = 177521.73
Number of Bag of candies required = 177521.73 / 200 = 887.6
Total cost = 887.6 x .67 = 594.7 dollar.
