Question
16. Two large, oppositely charged, conducting parallel plates create a uniform electric field between them. An electron is released from a point near the negative plate and an a particle (helium nucleus with 2 protons and 2 neutrons) is released from near the positive plate. If the electron strikes the positive plate with a velocity of 2.0x 107 m/s, what is the velocity of the particle when it strikes the negative plate? (1) 3.3 x 105 m/s (2) 2.4 x 109 m/s (3) 6.6 × 105 m/s (4) 2.3 × 105 m/s (5) 1.2×109 m/sExplanation / Answer
suppose field inbetween plates is E.
then a = q E / m
vf^2 - vi^2 = 2 a d
v = sqrt(2 q E d / m )
v sqrt(m / q) = sqrt(2 E d) = constant for both casees
(2 x 10^7) sqrt(9.109 x 10^-31 / e) = v sqrt(4 x 1.66 x 10^-27 / 2e)
v = 3.3 x 10^5 m/s
