Question
Six insulated containers hold 3,750 g of water at 24°C. A small copper cylinder is placed in each container; the masses and initial temperatures of the cylinders vary as given below. Rank the containers according to the maximum temperature of the water in each container after the cylinder is added, from largest to smallest. You may assume that the cylinder is completely submerged in the water.
A. m = 250 g; T = 30°C
B. m = 500 g; T = 60°C
C. m = 750 g; T = 90°C
D. m = 500 g; T = 15°C
E. m = 750 g; T = 30°C
F. m = 250 g; T = 60°C
Explanation / Answer
To rank these, we must first consider the overall temperature of the copper cylinder. The water is at 20 degree celcius. so adding a copper cylinder with temperature of 90 degree will lead to maximum increase in temperature. In case the temperature is same for two cylinders, we will have to look at mass, the cylinder with greater mass will have gretaer increase in overall temperature.
It should be C>B>F>E>A>D (Largest to smallest)
