Question
Why is the phenomenon of superconductivity not used in everyday life, for example to reduce energy loss in transmission lines from distant power plants to cities?
1. Superconductivity supports only DC current, not the AC current that power plants supply.
2. The earth’s own magnetic field is suffi- cient to destroy superconductivity in a very long wire.
3. It is not practical to maintain the very low temperatures required over large distances.
4. Superconducting wires are just too expensive.
5. Superconductivity is not mentioned in the Bible, so good citizens know it is Satanic in origin.
6. If the voltage is too great, any material ceases to superconduct.
Explanation / Answer
Is is not practical to maintain the very low temperature required over large distances.
High temperature superconductive material shows superconducting property at as high as 203kelvin so it's imprectical to use superconducting material for transmission lines till date
