Question

Conceptual Exercise 28.28 10 of 16 Part A The figure shows four different cases where light of wavelength reflects from both the top and the bottom of a thin film of thickness d. The indices of refraction of the film and the media above and below it are indicated in the figure(Figure 1) For which of the cases will the two reflected rays undergo constructive interference if d = /4 constructive interference occurs in case 2 and case 3 constructive interference occurs in case 2 and case 4 constructive interference occurs in case 3 and case 4 constructive interference occurs in case 1 and case 2 Figure 1 of 1 Submit Request Answer Part B 1.5 1.4 For which of the cases will the two reflected rays undergo constructive interference if d-/2 1.5 1.5 1.4 1.5 constructive interference occurs in case 2 and case 3 constructive interference occurs in case 2 and case 4 constructive interference occurs in case 3 and case 4 constructive interference occurs in case 1 and case 2

Explanation / Answer

for the given set of refractive media

we have to remember that when ight passes from optically denser to rarer medium it undergoes no phase change

where as when it passes from optically rarer to denser medium it undergoes a phase shift of pi/2

hence

A. when d = lambda/4

1. ligt passes from denser to rarer media at both interfaces

so for constgructive interference , d = lambda/2

similiarly

2. for constructive interference, d = lambda/2

3. d = lamdba/4

4. d = lambda/4

hence constructive interference occus in case 3 and 4

B. for case B

constructive interference occurs for case 1 and 2
