CentastUs Halliday, Fundamentals of Physics, 10e University Physics (University Gradebook ORION Downloadable eTextbook ment Chapter 06, Problem 060 In the figure, a box of ant aunts (total mass m -1.78 ko) and a box of ant undes (total mass m2 - 4.44 kg) slide down an indned plane while attached by a massless rod paralel to the plane. The angle of incine is 8-26, The coefficiert of kinctic fnction between the aunt box and the incline is 0.206; that between the unde box and the inciie is u2-0.121. Compute (a) the tension in the rod and (b) the comemon acoeleration of the two baxes (a) Number (b) Number Units Unts pROeLEM Question Attempts: Unlimited sAE FOR LATER

Explanation / Answer

(a) T is the tension in the rod (T / m) is the upward acceleration on m due to T and

(T/ m) is the downward acceleration on m due to T

g (sin – cos ) – (T / m) = (T/ m) + g (sin – cos ) = a

T = m* m ( - ) g (cos ) / (m +m)

T = 1.78*4.44*(0.206-0.121)* 9.8*cos26/(1.78+4.44) = 0.9513 N

=======================================...

(b)

The net downward acceleration is a = g (sin – cos )

[Where = (m +m)/ (m + m) = [0.206*1.78 +0.121*4.44]/ (4.44+1.78) = 0.145325

a = 9.8* (sin26° – 0.145325 *cos26°) = 3.016 m/s²
