Question
Eddy currents are electric currents thatcan arise in a piece of metal when it moves through a region wherethe magnetic field is not the same everywhere. The picture shows, for example, a metal sheet moving to the right at a velocityv and a magnetic field B that isdirected perpendicular to the sheet. At the instant represented, the magnetic field only extends over the left half of the sheet. Anemf is induced that leads to the eddy current shown. Explains why this current causes themetal sheet to slow down? This action of eddy currents is used invarious devices as a brake to damp out unwanted motion.
xXx 20 Metal sheet 2 4 2x Eddy currentExplanation / Answer
motion of sheet causes change in magnetic flux which induces emf and eddy currents.
According to Lenz's law the direction of induced current is such that it opposes the cause(movement of sheet),
therfore metal sheet slows down.
