Question

carrying current 1 -7.0 A, in the direction 3) In the figure, a rectangular current loop is indicated, rectangle. The rectangle loop has length 0.80 m and its sides are 0.10 m and 0.70 m from the wire. If the net force on the loop is to have magnitude 1.7 x 10-6 N and is to be directed towards the wire, what must be the magnitude and direction (from top to bottom or from bottom to top in the sketch) of the current/w in the wire? (0-4 × 10-7 T-m/A) near a long wire carrying a current Iw. The long wire is parallel to the sides of the 0.80 m 0.10 m 0.70 m

Explanation / Answer

As the net force is directed towards the wire,

the force on the side 0.1 m is greater than the side 0.7 m from wire

the force on 0.1 m side is towards the wire

By right hand rule the magnetic filed due Iw is directed downwards

and the current Iw is from bottom to top

magnetic force on the side 0.1 m from wire = F1 = uo*Iw*I1*L/(2*pi*r1)   ( towards)

magnetic force on the side 0.7 m from wire = F2 = uo*Iw*I1*L/(2*pi*r2)   ( away )

given F1 - F2 = 1.7*10^-6

r1 = 0.1 m

r2 = 0.7 m

uo*Iw*I1*L*(1/r1 - 1/r2) = 1.7*10^-6

4*pi*10^-7*Iw*7*0.8*(1/0.1 - 1/0.7) = 1.7*10^-6

Iw = 0.028 A <<<<<-----------ANSWER
