The most economically accesible microscopes are the light microscopes (they use visible light to form images): Compound microscope and Stereoscope.
The compound microscope has high magnification, you can observe individual cells with them, but the image is two dimensional and they have low resolution.
The stereoscope is also knows as dissection microscope. The image is three dimensional. It's very useful for dissections, it allows you to get a better look at a larger specimen, but it has low magnification, you can't view cells.
There are also electron microscopes that use electrons for generating images. There are two types: Scanning electrone microscope (SEM) and Transmission electrone microscope (TEM). Both have high magnification and resolution, but their limitation is that they are very expensive. The scanning electrone microscope generates 3-D images, while the transmission electrone microscope is 2-D.
