Question
If you read a claim in the New York Times that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) was more fattening than sucrose, would you believe it? What if the newspaper reported that an increase in HFCS in food and beverages coincided with an increase in the rate of obesity in the American population? _ Refined sugar HFCS -Glucose syrup Dextrose -Honey --Edible syrups_Total sugars This is a correlation, but is HFCS consumption the cause of the increase in obesity in the American population? Are sucrose and HFCS metabolized differently by cells? 160 140 120 100 2. 80 60 O 40 20 0 Calendar Year U.S. per capita caloric sweeteners, 1966 - 2015, for domestic food and beverage use. Actual human intake of caloric sweeteners is lower because of uneaten food, spoilage, and other losses. (USDA Table 50) How could you test this experimentally? Could you design an experiment that would show a cause and effect relationship between HFCS and weight gain? 1 ptExplanation / Answer
High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) contains fructose in higher amount, which is responsible for various life threatening diseases such as obesity, Weight gain, heart problem and diabetes etc. This sugar gets metabolized inside the liver where it gets converted into glycogen. Excess of fructose also increase the body cholesterol level which contribute in increase in lipid and fat level.
Impact of HFCS and glucose can be observed through In-Vivo testing, where animal model can be used to differentiate the effect of both sugars. We can designed the experiment In three set of animals can be used i.e. having diet of fructose, second one will have glucose rich diet and third one will have normal routine diet. After 2, 4, 7 days of diet we can estimate there weight upto one month.
Results of 1st and 2nd group can be correlated with the 3rd group of animals having normal routine diet.
In other experiment you can choose 10 volunteers where you will select the 5 for fructose rich diet and 5 for glucose diet. After you one week you can check there cholesterol level, which can be marker for determination of effect.
