Question

Topic Over the next few days, look for rainbows. Not in the sky, necessarily, but rainbows projected on walls as sunlight streams through a window, or as light passes through a vase or an aquarium. In your initial post to the discussion, do the following: 1. Describe the rainbows you see, and explain what caused them and how they were produced. 2. Include a picture of one of the rainbows you observe, and a ray diagram showing how the light was bent to produce the image. 3. Describe at least one optical instrument that uses either refraction or reflection, Identify which of the two it uses, and for what purpose

Explanation / Answer

The rainbows formed are because the white light containing all the frequencies in the visible range refracts when incident on a material (here, a raindrop or the glass window). Since the refractive indices of each frequency is slightly different, this separates these frequencies in phase thereby separating out every color.

An optical fiber is an instrument where reflection is used (total internal reflection) for guiding the electromagnetic waves from one place to another distant place with minimal loss.
