Question

Two small nonconducting spheres have a total charge of Q=Q1+Q2= 85.0 C , Q1<Q2. When placed 22.0 cm apart, the force each exerts on the other is 12.0 N and is repulsive.

A. What is the charge Q1? Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units.

B. What is the charge Q2? Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units.

C. What would Q1 be if the force were attractive? Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units.

D. What would Q2 be if the force were attractive? Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

Given,

Q1 + Q2 = 85 uC

Q2 = 85 uC - Q1

Force, F = k Q1 Q2/r^2

12 = (9 x 10^9) x Q1 x (85 x 10^-6 - Q1)/0.22^2

Q1 = 7.66 x 10^-7 C

b)

so Q2 = 8.42 x 10^-5 C

c)

if attractive then F = -12

so

-12 = (9 x 10^9) x Q1 x (85 x 10^-6 - Q1)/0.22^2

Q1 = -7.52 x 10^-7 C

d) Q2 = 8.58 x 10^-5 C
