Question
Question 2 (1 point) An object is moving with a constant velocity in the -y-direction. Suddenly, it experiences an acceleration in the -x-direction. Which of the following is true? The velocity vector will begin to turn towards the -x-direction. O The velocity vector will continue to point in the -y-direction, since the two directions are independent. O The velocity vector will continue to point in the -y-direction, but its magnitude will shrink to zero O The velocity vector will begin to turn towards the +x-direction.Explanation / Answer
Answer : a) The velocity vector will begin to turn towards the -x direction.
Reason:
Initially, we have velocity vector along -y only and the velocity vector in -x direction is zero. So when the object experiences an acceleration in -x direction, the magnitude of velocity vector in -x direction starts increasing with time ( this is in accordance with the 1st law of motion : v = u + a*t). So, as time passes the object starts gaining velocity in -x direction also. And since there is no force acting in -y direction, the velocity of object remains constant in -y direction throughout the journey. After some time we will see that the object has a velocity vector in -x direction (which is contributed by the acceleration in -x direction ) and it also has a velocity vector in -y direction. So the resultant of these two will be a vector lying between -x and -y axes. Initially the velocity vector was purely pointing in the -y direction but now after application of accleration the velocity vector turned towards -x direction.
