Case Study II: Orehidaceae Problem: Provide a classification for the two taxa (A & B) using any of the following categories: genus, species, subspecies, variety, and form. Materials, Methods, and Supplemental Data: Taxon A widespread in northeastern North America, grows in cool, wet, neutral, often highly organic soils, in habitats varying from the full sun of roadside ditches and wet meadows to the shade of seasonally wet woodlands. Taxon B is restricted to Appalachian uplands in the south but grows at progressively lower altitudes northward, reaching sea level in the New England states. It grows in soils similar to those characteristic of Taxon A habitats and also grows in full sun to shade, frequently under or near conifers. Taxon B is collected more often in well-drained soils of upland conifer or northern hardwood forests than is Taxon A.
