Question
Chinook salmon are able to move through water especially fast by jumping out of the water periodically. This behavior is called porpoising. Suppose a salmon swimming in still water jumps out of the water with velocity 6.41 m/s at 44.1 above the horizontal, sails through the air a distance L before returning to the water, and then swims the same distance L underwater in a straight, horizontal line with velocity 3.70 m/s before jumping out again. (a) Determine the average velocity of the fish for the entire process of jumping and swimming underwater m/s (b) Consider the time interval required to travel the entire distance of 2L. By what percentage is this time interval reduced by the jumping/swimming process compared with simply swimming underwater at 3.70 m/s?Explanation / Answer
Given,
v1 = 6.41 m/s ; theta = 44.1 deg ; v2 = 3.7 m/s
a)we know that
L = v^2 sin(theta) cos(theta)/g
L = 6.41^2 x sin(2x44.1)/9.81 = 4.2 m
t = 6.41 sin44.1/9.81 = 0.45 s
T = 2t = 2 x 0.45 = 0.9 s
t = 4.2/3.7 = 1.14 s
T' = 0.9 + 1.14 = 2.04 s
Vav = 2 x 4.02/2.04 = 3.94 m/s
Hence, Vav = 3.94 m/s
b)t = 2.04 s ;
t' = 2 x 4.02/3.7 = 2.17 s
% = (2.17 - 2.04)/2.17 x 100 = 5.99 = 6%
Hence, % = 6%
[if asked vice versa, ans = 6.37%]
