Question

QUESTION 7 An experiment is conducted to determine what physical properties identify a metal. One part of the experiment tested the melting point of a substance. An iron nail, a copper penny, and a piece of lead pipe were heated in an oven at 250 degrees Celslus. None of the metals showed any change. The conclusion, based on the experimental data, is that all metals have a melting point above 250 degrees Celsius. The above conclusion is: an overgeneralization O a personal bias O based on sound reasoning O an illogical conclusion

Explanation / Answer

It is an overgeneralization. Only 3 metals are tested, we can talk only about them, that is: lead, copper and iron have melting point above 250°C.

To make the following conclusion: " All metals have melting point above 250°C." One has to do experiment literally on all existing metals.

It is not the case of an illogical conclusion because the conclusion holds true for the metals experimented. But the error is in generalisation of the result for other metals.
