Question
1. Suppose you are testing the relationship between the sizes of a bowling ball, experience of the bowler and number of pins knocked over . First , a professional bowls a 5cm bowling ball and knocks over 1 pin,3 pins and 1 pin in 3 different trials. Thea, an amateur bowls a 50 cm bowling ball and knocks over 10 pins, 10pins in 3 different trials. Thus you conclude that an amateur bowlers knock over more pins than professional bowlers. What is wrong with this experiment and what can be done to correct it.
2. Supose you want to design an experiment that determines the speed required to launch a ball upwards 2 meters. Which would be better at launching the ball exactly 2 meters p, a human throwing it upwards or a launcher ? Explain your reasoning.
Explanation / Answer
1. As the ball size is increasing, it will sweep a large area so probability of hitting more number of pins will increase. Even though the professional player is well practiced one, since 5cm diameter is very small he lost to the amateur player as his ball is very large. In order have fair experiment the size of ball should be same for both of them.
2. Humans don't have any sense which can help us exactly determine with how much force we have to throw the ball to a height of 2m. In oder to master it as a human we have to practice it thousands of times. So it is better to use a launcher to conduct the experiment accurately
