Question

Sphere A and sphere B are made of steel and are connected together by a metal wire. Sphere B has a radius that is four times that of sphere A and the dimensions of the wire are negligible. Sphere A has a charge of +2uC on it. Explain briefly why the potential s of the two sphere must be the same if this is a static situation.

Explanation / Answer

We assume that sphere are far away so that electric field of one sphere does not affect another sphere.

When two conducting sphere are connected by a conducting wire then charge can flow through this wire. We know that positive charge moves from higher to lower potential (along electric field) while negative charge moves from lower to higher potential(opposite to electric field),By connecting them we have provided them medium to flow in. If we want static condition of charge after redistribution, the potential of both sphere must be equal.

When we connect the sphere then charge will flow through wire in such a way that potential of both sphere becomes equal so that furher movement of charge would not happen.
