BACK NEXT PRINTER VERSION Chapter 06, Problem 40 Go The drawing shows two boxes resting on frictionless ramps. One box is relatively light and sits on a steep ramp. The other box is heavier and rests on a ramp that is less steep. The boxes are released from rest at A and allowe ground, determine the speed of (a) the lighter box and (b) the heavier box when each reaches B. Explanation / Answer

here,

mass of lighter , m1 - 8 kg

mass of heavier , m2 = 30 kg

Ha = 6.5 m , Hb = 1 m

a)

let the speed of lighter at point B be v1

using conservation of energy

0.5 * m1 *v1^2 = m1 * g * (Ha - Hb)

0.5 * v1^2 = 9.81 * ( 6.5 - 1)

solving for v1

v1 = 10.4 m/s

the speed of lighter at point B is 10.4 m/s

b)

let the speed of heavier at point B be v2

using conservation of energy

0.5 * m2 * v2^2 = m2 * g * (Ha - Hb)

0.5 * v2^2 = 9.81 * ( 6.5 - 1)

solving for v2

v2 = 10.4 m/s

the speed of heavier at point B is 10.4 m/s

c)

as both has the same speed at point B

the ratio of heavier to lighter box , R = (0.5 * m2 * v2^2) /(0.5 * m1 * v1^2)

R = m2 /m1

R = 30/8

R = 3.75
