SHOW YOUR WORK. EXPLAIN YOUR ANSWERS. Express your results in the appropriate units. 1. Four capacitors have capacitances C1-10.0 C,-20.0 F, C,-25.0 F. and C.. 50.0 F (a) (2p) Determine the equivalent capacitance of the system when all four capacitors are connected in series. (b) (2p) Determine the equivalent capacitance of the system when all four capacitors are connected in parallel. Use the appropriate number of significant digits in your results in (a) and (b). 2. Refer to the circuit presented in the figure below. The emf of each source is 12.0123456789 V, and the internal resistance is ro- 0.01230123 . Two of the resistors have a resistance Ro 10.9876543210 . The remaining resistor have an unknown resistance Rx (a) (1p) Draw l, l2, and l3 (currents in the circuit) as arrows. Write Kirchhoff's first rule for this circuit (b) (15p) Determine the current through the unknown resistor Rx. Eo Ro Ro

Explanation / Answer

1)Given,

C1 = 10 ; C2 = 20 ; C3 = 25 ; C4 = 50 ; all in uF

a)When capacitors are connected i series

1/Ceq = 1/C1 + 1/C2 + 1/C3 + 1/C4

1/Ceq = 1/10 + 1/20 + 1/25 + 1/50 = 0.21

Ceq = 1/0.21 = 4.76 uF

Hence, Ceq = 4.762 uF

b)When the given capacitors are connected in parallel

Ceq = C1 + C2 + C3 + C4

Ceq = 10 + 20 + 25 + 50 = 105 uF

Hence, Ceq = 105 uF
