Question

Two parallel plates, each having area A = 2506cm2 are connected to the terminals of a battery of voltage Vb = 6 V as shown. The plates are separated by a distance d = 0.37cm. You may assume (contrary to the drawing) that the separation between the plates is small compared to a linear dimension of the plate.

1)

What is C, the capacitance of this parallel plate capacitor?

F

2)

What is Q, the charge stored on the top plate of the this capacitor?.

C

3)

A dielectric having dielectric constant = 4 is now inserted in between the plates of the capacitor as shown. The dielectric has area A = 2506 cm2 and thickness equal to half of the separation (= 0.185 cm) . What is the charge on the top plate of this capacitor?

C

4)

What is U, the energy stored in this capacitor?

J

5)

The battery is now disconnected from the capacitor and then the dielectric is withdrawn. What is V, the voltage across the capacitor?

V

Explanation / Answer

Only first four subparts as per chegg's guidelines

1) C = EoA / d

C = 8.85e-12*2506e-4 / 0.37e-2

C = 5.994e-4 uF

2) Q = CV

Q = 5.994e-4*6

Q = 3.596e-3 uC

3) It will act as two capacitors in series, so we have

1/EoA / d/2 + 1/EoAk / d/2 = 1/C

1/1.198e-3 + 1/4.795e-3 = 1/C

C = 958.5 uF

Q = 9.59e-4*6

Q = 5.754e-3 uC

4) U = 1/2QV

U = 1.726E-8 J
