Intro to Vectors (Basic Trigonon, er?actionsactivityBranding&COURSEID 2832& SECTIONID-126177 2 Vectors HW: Question 2, Part 2 Your diagram for Vectors HW Question 2, Part 1 should have looked like this North Eist Please answer the following question(s): Suppose you first walk A 12 m in a direction 20 west of north and then B 20 m in a direction 40° south of west. Let the +x-axis coincide with the easterly direction and the +y-axis with the northerly direction. (b) Find the components of A and B along the E and N directions. A, (c) Find the components of resultant R A+B along the E and N directions 2 mExplanation / Answer
Suppose given that Vector is V and it makes angle T with +x-axis, then it's components are given by:
Vx = V*cos T
Vy = V*sin T
Using above rule:
A = 12 m, direction 20 deg W of N
A = 12 m, direction 70 deg N of W (2nd quadrant, So x -ve and y +ve)
Ax = -12*cos 70 deg = -4.10 m
Ay = 12*sin 70 deg = 11.28 m
B = 20 m, direction 40 deg S of W (3rdquadrant so x and y both -ve)
Bx = -20*cos 40 deg = -15.32 m
By = -20*sin 40 deg = -12.85 m
Now
R = A + B
R = (Ax + Bx) i + (Ay + By) j
R = (-4.10 - 15.32) i + (11.28 - 12.85) j
R = -19.42 i - 1.57 j
So, Rx = -19.42 m
Ry = -1.57 m
