Question

Suspended ball Due in 3 hours e ow, In the figure, a small nonconducting ball of mass m-6.1 g and charge q-6.00x10-8 C (distributed uniformly through its volume) hangs from an insulating thread that makes an angle = 260 with a vertical, uniformly charged nonconducting sheet (shown in cross section). Considering the gravitational force on the ball and assuming the sheet extends far vertically and into and out of the page, calculate the surface charge density of the sheet. Im Submit Answer Tries 0/10

Explanation / Answer

Given,

Mass of the ball, m = 0.0061 kg

Charge, q = 6 x 10^-8 C

Horizontal forces, qE = T sin(theta) .......(1)

Vertical forces, mg = T cos(theta) .......(2)

Dividing equation (1) and (2)

qE /mg tan(theta)

E = mg tan(theta)/ q = (0.0061 x 9.8) x tan26/(6 x 10^-8)

E = 4.86 x 10^5 N/C

The electric field due to infinite sheet E = sigma /2 e0

Surface charge density,

Sigma = 2e0 x E = 2 x 8.85 x 10^-12 x 4.86 x 10^5

Sigma = 8.6 x 10^-6 C/m^2
