1. Determine the centripetal acceleration, in m / s^2, of a car moving at a speed of 40 mph on a curve whose radius is 20.0 m.

2. The period of a stone moving in a horizontal circle with a radius of 50 cm is 1.00 s. Determine (a) its tangential velocity and (b) its centripetal acceleration.

3. Calculate the centripetal force in a car of 1500 kg mass that moves in a curve 100 meters in diameter when it is moving at a speed of 25 m / s.

Explanation / Answer

1)we know centripetal acceleration=a=v^2/r

v=40mph=17.88 m/s

r=20 m

a=(17.88)^2 / 20= 15.98 m/s^2

2)we know

f=1/T=1/1 =1Hz

a) Vt=2*3.14*f*r=2*3.14*1*0.5=3.14 m/s

b) a=v^2/r = (3.14^2)/0.5 = 19.72 m/s^2

3)Fc= ma=1500*25*25/50=18.75 kN
