The magnetic field has a magnitude of 0.394 T, and the length of the rod is 1.40 m. The only resistance in the a magnitude of circuit is that due to the bulb. What is the shortest distance along the rails that the rod would have to s ide for the bulb to remain lit for one-half second? Conducting rail Xx x Figure 22.4b

Explanation / Answer

Given,

Resistance, R = 217 ohm

Magnetic field, B = 0.394 T

Length, l = 1.4 m

Power, P = v^2/R

Emf, e = sqrt(PR) = lvB

Emf, e = sqrt(60 x 217)

Emf, e = 114.11 V

so lvB = 114.11

Velocity, v = 114.11/(1.4 x 0.394)

Velocity, v = 206.86 m/s

Shortest distance, d = vt = 206.86 x 0.5 = 103.43 m
