Question

You are a neW project manager at CDoT and nave been taSked With developing the preliminary budget for a new maintenance and snow plow storage yard in ldaho Springs, CO. It will be modeled after the one at the junction of US40 and I-70 near Empire, CO. The preliminary design includes 4 buildings on a 3 Acre site. The site is covered in 18" of Aggregate base course: a 16,000 SF Shop, a 12,000 SF Warehouse, a 3,000 SF Sand Shed, and a 2,500 SF Fueling Station. Each of these proposed buildings has a 12" concrete slab foundation with 12" of aggregate base course subgrade prep. The northern half of the project site includes the proposed Warehouse and the Shop buildings. The northern half of the project site is also the site that requires excavation. The southern half of the site includes the proposed Sand Shed and the Fueling Station buildings. The southern half of the site is also the location requiring embankment. You have determined that the site will require 15,000 CY of material to be cut and 25,000 CY of material to be filled to meet their proposed grades. The quantities given are raw quantities and have been calculated from final surface elevations, (top of concrete and aggregate base course) a) Is this site an import or and export site? b) What is an import source location or export material dump location, depending on your findings from part a and how far away is from ldaho Springs? c) Based on shrinkage of 10% how many CCY of material need to be imported/exported taking into account for the hold downs for the slab and paving?

Explanation / Answer

a) The northern part of project require excavation with 15,000 CY material and southern part require 25,000 CY materialto be filled up.

Thus 15,000 of filled material can be internally utilized in site but rest 10,000 of material required to be imported from outside.

Thus it is an import site.

b) The project of Idaho spring will be modeled after the project at junction of I-70 and US-40. Thus the material in Idaho spring will be imported from this site. This site is 700 mile far.

c) Total depth of concrete slab foundation= 12"

Total paving depth required= 12"

Thus total depth below area required= 24"= 2ft.

Total area of construction= 16,000+ 12,000+2,500+ 3,000 = 33500sqft

So total CCY material required= 2*33500+10,000= 77,000

Accounting for shrinkage of 10%

Total CCY material required to be

imported=1.1*77,000= 84,700.
