Problem 1 Calculating Ecological Footprint 1.8 T 1.6 1.4 1.2 1.0 Built-up land World biocapacity Fishing ground l Forest 0.6 0.4 0.2 Grazing land Cropland Carborn footprint 1960 1970 1980 1990 2000 2008 Year FIGURE Humanity's ecological footprint has nearly tripled since 1961, when we began to collect global environmental data. Source: WW, 2012. Questions: 1. In the Figure, which factor shown has the largest effect? The second largest? 2. Which has the smallest? Can you explain the idea of a "global hectare? 3. Which factor has increased the most since 1963? 4. Think of a parent or grandparent who was an adult in 1963. In what ways was his or her energy use different from yours? Why?Explanation / Answer
(1) From the above graph, it can be seen that the largest effect is shown by carbon footprint, the second highest difference is shown in cropland.
(2) The smallest effect is shown by the carbon foot print, the global hectare is a unit for measuring the quantity of ecological foot print of people or activities and the biocapacity of earth or its regions, it can also be defined as the amount of land required per hectare of biologically active land and fisheries for human use.
(3) The factor which has increased most since 1963 observed from the graph is the cropland which has shown an increase of 0.85.
(4) There are many changes which took place between 1963 and 2008, the most rapid change which took place is in transportation, the most common mode of transport at that time was bicycle which used physical energy for transport, but now the most common mode of transport is car which uses fuel to generate chemical energy and electrical energy and then converts it into mechanical energy for transport, this is leading to a very serious concern in the environment and it is damaging the ecological balance.
