Question
1. Give an example of natural selection. Explain how natural selection has helped that organism's survival and reproductive success. (4 points) 2. As mentioned in class, geographic isolation can lead to the formation of new species, such as Darwin's finches he observed. What other ways can new species form? (4 points) 3. Give a specific example of resource partitioning (specific species). (2 points) 4 A bird's beak is specialized for cracking seeds. What would be the physical characteristics of this beak? The natural selection explain that it is the process in nature by which organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and reproduce more than those less adapted to their environment.
For example,
1. Treefrogs are sometimes eaten by snakes and birds.
2. Gray Treefrogs blend well in dark wooded areas on tree bark and Green Treefrogs blend in well with green vegetation found in marshes and swamps.
3. A Green Treefrog on the bark of a tree is easier for a predator to find, compared to a Green Treefrog on a green leaf. So, Green Treefrogs that go into habitats where they are not camouflaged are more likely to be eaten by predators.
4. Since Treefrogs that have been eaten do not live to have any more baby Treefrogs, natural selection has favored Treefrogs that live in habitats in which they are more camouflaged.
So that the variations enhance fitness or the probability that an organism will survive and reproduce in a given environment. Conversely, unfavorable variations will diminish fitness and very likely lead to the demise of their bearers. Call this non-random process of differential survival and reproduction based on contingent environmental circumstances natural selection.
