Question
Exercise The acquisition of antibiotic resistance in certain bacterial species in a given location occurs over time. How does antibiotic resistance relate to evolution? Form a group of 4 students. Define each of the principles of evolution listed below. Then compare them to Sam's story of the antibiotic resistant bacteria. Explain how bacterial antibiotic resistance demonstrates each principle. Designate 1 student in the group to report your findings to the rest of theclass- . Phenotype vs. genotype .Diversity . Phenotype is the physical appearance of an organism due to it's genetic makeup.
1) Genotype is a set of genes in our DNA responsible for a particular trait.
2) the diversity of something is the fact that it is made up of very different elements.
3) An allele is one of the possible forms of a gene. Most genes have two alleles, a dominant allele and a recessive allele
Allele frequency is a measure of the relative frequency of an allele on a genetic locus in a population
4) Gene pool is the stock of different genes in an interbreeding population.
5) natural selection is the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring.
6)A population bottleneck or genetic bottleneck is a sharp reduction in the size of a population due to environmental events such as earthquakes, floods, fires, disease, or droughts, or human activities such as genocide.
7)Heritability, amount of phenotypic variation in a population that is attributable to individual genetic differences.
8) adaptation is defined as the process of change by which an organism is best suited to its environment.
9) population is a group of organisms that live and interbreed at one place.
Individual is a single organism.
10) mutation is defined as the changing of the structure of a gene, resulting in a variant form which may be transmitted to subsequent generations, caused by the change in DNA sequence.
11)lateral gene transfer is the movement of genetic material between unicellular and/or multicellular organisms.
bacterial antibiotic resistance is the adaptation of bacteria to the antibiotics. The bacteria mutate in such a way that it become resistant to the drug and continue to grow.
Bacteria also transfer their genese via horizontal gene transfer. That is one reason for them to become antibiotic resistant.
