Question

Select all of the following situations in which the normal Zeeman effect occurs.
___ S = 0, L =/= 0, ground state
___ S = 0, L =/= 0, excited state
___ S =/= 0, L = 0, excited state
___ S = 0, L = 0, excited state

Explanation / Answer

The “Zeeman effect” is the energy shift of atomic states caused by an magnetic field. This shift is due to the coupling of the electron orbital angular momentum to the external magnetic field. The normal Zeeman effect occurs when there is no spin magnetic moment – states with zero spin are necessary The splitting is associated with what is called the orbital angular momentum quantum number L of the atomic level. This quantum number can take non-negative integer values. The number of split levels in the magnetic field is (2L + 1). Case 1) S=0, L =/= 0, ground state 2L+1 >1 zeeman effect occurs Case 2) S=0, L =/= 0, excited state excited state means L > given L 2L+1 > 1 (or) 2L+1 >= 3 hence normal Zeeman effect occurs Case 3) S=/=0, L=0,excited state As stated above for normal zeeman effect spin angular momentum must be zero hence normal Zeeman effect does not occurs Case 4) S=0, L=0 excited state excited state means L > given L 2L+1 >= 3 hence normal Zeeman effect occurs except the 3rd case in all other cases normal zeeman effect occurs. Note: In my previous post i got little confused so Wrong answer. This would match your answer
