Question

Problem 3. 9 points. Three patients come to the lab. Their renal threshold is measured. All the patients have the same renal threshold. One OR two patients is/are given an SGLT2 inhibitor; it an absent-minded researcher. The plot shows their blood glucose and urine glucose responses AFTER taking either the SGLT2 inhibitor pill or the control pill, that is a p called a placebo). IMPORTANT NOTE: We do not know how much glucose they have consumed, so we do not know how high their blood glucose might have gone if they were not on the inhibitorl So you need to read the times on the urine glucose graph to figure out the threshold on the blood glucose graph. Which patient(s) are taking the SGLT2 inhibitor? 20 12 10 12 20 18 16 14 12,10842o 20181414121086

Explanation / Answer

Answer - Orange patient.

SGLT2 inhibitors prevent the kidneys from reabsorbing glucose back into the blood. So lot of glucose will excrete in the urine. This leads to lower blood glucose level.

In the graph it clearly shows that urine glucose output increase from 8hr=9 units, 12 hr=13 units and 14 hr=13units same time blood glucose is decreasing.
