Question

5. (I point) Answer each of the following questions regarding base compositions. a) State whether each of the following base composition relationships is true or false. i) A+ G = T + C ii) AT-G/C iv) A/C = G/T ii (A + C)(G+T-1.0 vi) A/G = T/C v) (A + T)/(C + G) = 1.0 b) The percentage of cytidine nucleotides in a double-stranded DNA segment is 17%. What is the percentage of adenosine in that DNA? c) A double-stranded DNA polynucleotide contains 80 thymidine and 110 guanosine nucleotides. What is the total number of base pairs in this DNA fragment? d) The percentage of adenosine nucleotides in a double-stranded DNA segment 500 base pairs long is 23%. How many cytidine nucleotides are present in this segment?

Explanation / Answer

Ans- (a) 1 true

2 true

3 false

4 false

5 true

6 true

Ans-B- the cytisine is 17% which means guinine is also 17% so the thymine and adenosine will be 100-34= 66% and when we want individual value of sdenosine it will be 66/2 = 33%

Ans-C-thymadine makes pair with adenosine and guanosine makes pair with cytosine so the total no of base pair will be 110+80= 190

Ans-D- total nucleotide =500

Adenosine = 23% or 23/100×500= 115

Adenosine makes pair with thymadine so thymadine will also be 115 and both makes a total of 230.

Cytosine and guanosine are left = 500-230= 270

They are present in equal number so the cytosine number will be 270/2= 135
