Question

1. (20%) The only force acting on a 2.0 kg body as it moves along the x axis varies as shown in Figure below. The velocity of the body at x = 0 is 4.0 m/s. (a) What is the kinetic energy of the body at x = 3.0 m? (b) At what value of x will the body have a kinetic energy of 8.017 (c) What is the maximum kinetic energy attained by the body between x = 0 and x = 5.0 m? ?

Explanation / Answer

a)Work done on body till x=3m= area under curve from x=0 to x=3=-4J

KE=KEi+Work done=0.5*2*42-4=12J

b)Work done as a function of x for x>2 =area under graph=-4(x-2)J

KE=KEi+Work done

8.017=16-4(x-2)

Solving,

x=3.996m4.0m

c) maximum kinetic energy is till x=1m since the work done is positive only till then.

W=0.5*4=2J

KE=KEi+Work done=16+2=18J
