Question

The drawing shows a collision between two pucks on an air-hockey table. Puck A has a mass of 0.031 kg and is moving along the x axis with a velocity of +5.5 m/s. It makes a collision with puck B, which has a mass of 0.066 kg and is initially at rest. The collision is not head-on. After the collision, the two pucks fly apart with the angles shown in the drawing.

(a) Find the final speed of puck A. _____________m/s

(b) Find the final speed of puck B. _____________m/s

Explanation / Answer

Momentum conservation in horizontal direction: 0.031*5.5 + 0 = 0.031*va*Cos65 + 0.066*vb*Cos37

Momentum conservation in y direction, 0.031*va*Sin65 = 0.066*vb*Sin37

va = 1.414*vb

Putting it in first eqn, we get vb = 2.394 m/s

So, va = 1.414*2.394 = 3.385 m/s
