Question

Hello! I really need help with this exercise.... I appreciate your help :) PRE-LAB QUESTIONS You have heard that increasing carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere are leading to ocean acidification. You have also seen the equation for this reaction, wherein increasing CO2 reacts with H20 to form carbonic acid. In your virtual lab you have been provided with a sample of ocean water, a pH meter, and a straw. The straw lets you blow your exhaled CO2 into the water, creating bubbles of CO2 that will mix with the ocean water Based on this information, answer the following questions: 1. What is your hypothesis? 2. Design a simple experiment with the provided virtual materials to test your hypothesis. This should be in the form of a list of steps, written in complete sentences. EXPERIMENT pH Meter 10 12 14 pH: 7.6 Blow bubbles

Explanation / Answer

The hypothesis of the proposed experiment will be : Increasing CO2 in the atmosphere due to global warming is responsible for the acidification of the oceans

The procedure of experiment proposed will be:

1. At first a sample of ocean water is collected around a volume of 10 litre.

2. The pH is recorded by a pH meter.

3. The sample is then divided in to three container which has airtight lids and marked as A, B, C.

4. The A labelled container is kept as air tight and as a negative controll for the experiment, The B labelled container is covered with a semi permeable membrane to allow the passage of air but prevent evaporation of the water in the container, while the container labelled C is covered with a polythene and a pore for insertion of a straw to blow air.

5. After Blowing the Exhailing air for three to nine hours, the pH of the samples are checked for the change of pH.
