Question

A product designer comes to your company with an idea for producing single-passenger styrofoamrafts. The advantage of styrofoam rafts, it's claimed, is that you don't have to inflate them each time -just toss one in the pool and climb aboard.The raft is to be constructed from the EPS (expanded polystyrene) styrofoam your company makes,which has a density of 230 kg/m3.The designer proposes that the rafts be 2.2 m tall, 1.0 m wide, and4.0 cm thick.Would such a raft be able to keep an 85-kg adult from getting wet?

Explanation / Answer

Volume = 2.2 x 1 x 0.04 = 0.088 m^3 Bouyancy force = Weight of displaced water = 0.088 * 1000 * 9.81 = 863.28 N Total wight of raft and man = 0.088 * 230 + 85 * 9.81 = 854.09 N Since bouyance force is greater...it will be able to keep the man from getting wet... :)
