A war-wolf or trebuchet is a device used during the Middle Ages to throw rocks at castles and now sometimes used to fling large vegetables and pianos as a sport. A simple trebuchet is shown in the figure below. Model it as a stiff rod of negligible mass, d = 3.35 m long, joining particles of mass m1 = 0.115 kg and m2 = 73.5 kg at its ends. It can turn on a frictionless, horizontal axle perpendicular to the rod and 12.0 cm from the large-mass particle. The operator releases the trebuchet from rest in a horizontal orientation. find the velocity in m/s if you could explain me what laws are used and how u get to the answer i know is law of conservation of energy and moment of inertia but i cant get the answer. 5 stars!!!

I think the rod length given (2.8m) is the total length, including the .15m length between the pivot and the large particle. So, the length between the pivot and the small particle would be (2.8 - .15) = 2.65m. Changing your 2.85's to 2.65s reduces your answer to 23.97m/s This happens all the time to me. I do the difficult thinking correctly, and then lose a sign, or some other simple thing in the arithmetic.
