Question
Given the following diagram and data, calculate the quantity of steam required to regenerate the carbon in step 2. In step 1, we allow a polluted air stream to flow through a bed of activated carbon. Most of the pollutant molecules adsorb onto the carbon and are thus removed from the air. This step lasts for 6 hours, then the pollutant-laden bed is replaced with a new bed. After a bed gets loaded with pollutant, it is cleaned with steam. The steam removes all of the pollutant from the carbon. It has been found that a ratio of steam to pollutant of 7 kg steam/1 kg pollutant is necessary for complete cleaning. Calculate the quantity of steam required to do this job, kg/day. Assume the process runs 24 hr/day.Explanation / Answer
Air flow= 200 m3/min
Carbon content in air at the inlet= 500 mg/m3.
Therefore, carbon flow in input= 200 x 500= 100000 mg/min or 100 kg/min.
Carbon content in air at the outlet= 10 mg/m3.
Therefore, carbon flow in output= 200 x 10= 2000 mg/min or 2 kg/min.
Therefore, rate of accumulation of carbon in the carbon bed is 100 kg/min (inlet) - 2 kg/min (outlet) = 98kg/min.
Therefore, the amount of carbon accumulated in 6 hrs= 98 x 60 x 6= 35280 kg.
Therefore, the amount of steam required for one bed= 7 x 35280 kg= 246,960 kg.( because 7kg of steam / 1kg of pollutant is required)
As the process runs 24hrs/day there will be (24/6) i.e. 4 polluted beds per day
Therefore, total steam demand per day= 246,960 kg x 4= 987,840 kg/day.
