Question

Traffic Assignment (User Equilibrium Condition)

Consider two major routes namely Route 1 and Route 2 which connect two cities. The travel time functions for the two routes connecting these cities are as follows: t1 = 20 + 2Q1/125 and t2 = 16 + 2Q2/100 Where t1 and t2 are travel time on Route 1 and Route 2, respectively (minutes), similarly Q1 and Q2 are volumes (in Vehicles hour) via Route 1 and Route 2, respectively. During peak hour period, the total number of trips from one city to the other city is 900 veh/hour. a) Estimate the traffic volume and travel time on the two routes at a user equilibrium condition. b) To improve the travels between these two cities, a new route, namely Route 3 is proposed. This new route does not overlap with the two existing routes. The route 3 has the following travel time function: ts = 12 + 2Q3/125 Where t3 is travel time of Route 3 (minutes) and Q3 is volume (veh/hour) on Route 3. Compute the new traffic volumes and travel times on the 3 routes at a user equilibrium condition. c) Would the addition of a new route always reduce travel time at a user equilibrium condition? Explain your reasons.
