Question

The following volume of soil and rock is to be removed from a highway cut: Soil 13,000 yd3 of silt and 17,000 yd3 of silty clay; rock, 18,000 yd3 of limestone and 15,000 yd3 of hard shale. The shrinkage factor for the silt is 8% and for the silty clay it is 12%; the swell factor for the limestone is 19% and for the hard shale 9%. a. What will be the volume of the fill constructed form these materials? What is the overall volume change in cubic yards and percent? b. If the volume of the fill is designed to be 58,000 yd3, what would be the needed volume of offsite rock disposal? Next, assuming the rock dumped offsite would be shale, how much volume does this represent in the cut section?

Explanation / Answer

new volume of construction work = 13000*0.92 + 17000*0.88 + 18000*1.19 + 15000*1.09 = 64690 yd3

volume change =64690 -(13000+17000+18000+15000) = 1690 yd3

% change = 1690*100/63000 =2.68 %

offsite disposal = 64690-58000=6690 yd3

assuming 6690 yd3 shale has been disposed

as it is shale swell factor is 9%

x*1.09=6690

it represent 6690/1.09 yd3 = 6137 yd3 of soil cut
