Question
My problem is that when I am in conversions with other ee students, they always seem to be talking about computers and computer science. They go on about how their computer has (here's how bad I am if this example sounds totally ridiculous) 15 mega byte processor and other things. Today we were talking about sending a 1.6 giga byte file folder through email and how it exceeds the maximum data transmission and I said we could just split it into two right? I was looked at as if I had two heads.I understand giga mega and all of the prefixes. I love physics and math and one of the reasons I chose ee is because it is one of the more math intensive engineering fields. I love the fact that one day I could build I circuit that solves a problem in the avionics industry.
But I hate computers. I like using programs on computers to solve things but I don't give two flying hoots about how many bytes or hexadecimal code or anything like that. Programming is out of the question. I just cannot get into computers that way or understand them.
That being said, can I become an electrical engineer and just design circuits? I want to eventually get into avionics, systems engineering or control engineering. Would we suit me, or is mechanical a better choice?
Explanation / Answer
Look, you don't need to be a computer science expert to be an electrical engineer. So you don't have to be a computer expert, but you do have to be competent with it. If you just want to be an analog circuit designer no one will expect you to know HTML or anything like that, but they will expect that you can turn the computer on and know how to run the circuit simulation software they are using.
