Question

3.You are studying a pathway which leads to the synthesis of molecule “X” and in which a series of three enzymes (1, 2 and 3) catalyze the following three reactions:

     1                              2                               3

Precursor --> Intermediate A --> Intermediate B --> X

You isolate enzyme 1 and study its ability to convert the precursor to intermediate A. In the course of your study, you find that the reaction rate can be decreased by adding increasing amounts of molecule X. What do you conclude about the regulation of enzyme 1 and why?

Explanation / Answer

Reaction : precursor -->intermediate A is under feedback inhibition.

In this, the product formed inturn inhibits the reaction to occur.

enzyme 1 is under feedback inhibition.

eg. If G6P accumulates in a cell during glycolysis there is feedback inhibition of hexokinase and the reaction does not occur unless the G6P is consumed.
