Question

Refer to Fig. 4. The floating platform shown below is supported by 50 drums of 5' height. Each drum has 10 ft3 volume, and 200 lb self weight. The drums sink to mid-height (i.e. 2.5 ft) under the dead weight of the platform plus the dead weight of drums. Note that drums are cylindrical in x-section and are upright under the platform. Find: It is desired that additional load be put on the platform. How much additional load (in pounds) can be put on the platform if it is allowed that the drums can sink in water for an additional 1.5 ft (i.e. 4.0 ft altogether)

Explanation / Answer

dead weight of platform + drums = weight of water displaced
=volume of water displaced/ density of water
5*50ft3*62.4 lb/ft3

15600 lb

now

volume of water displaced in case of 4 ft sinking = (4/5) * 10 * 50 = 400ft3

weight of water displaced= 400*62.4 = 24960 lb

additional weight = 24960 - 15600 = 9360 lb
