Question

Draw any diagram related to the problem

An insulated rigid tank is divided into two compartments by a partition. One compartment contains 2.5 kmol ol carbon dioxide at 27degreeC and 200 kPa, and the other compartment contains 7.5 kmol of hydrogen gas at 40degreeC and 400 kPa. Now the partition is removed and the two gases are allowed to mix. Determine; after equilibrium has been established Use constant specific heat at room temperature for both gases. The mixture temperature The mixture pressure

Explanation / Answer

We first find temp of mixture;
heat lost by oxygen = heat gained by co2;
so m02cp(To2-x) = mco2cp(x-Tco2) ; solving we get, cp (o2)=0.9205 and for co2 it is 0.846 ; using moles calculating mass and substituting in above equation, we get Tmix =309.14 K= 36.14 0c------------->ANSWER

now for pressure, apply conservation of mass;(also can conserve no. of moles)so

nco2+n02 = n (mix);

(pV/RT)co2 +(pv/RT)o2 =(pv/RT)mix;

from v= nRT/p we calcutate Vco2= 31.1775 m3 and Vo2 =48.78m3 so total volume will be 79.97m3

substituing values, we get p(mix) = 321.3 KPa----------->ANSWER
