Question
Imagine walking out to the middle of a bridge high over a river with two identical balls (same mass & diameter) in hand. You drop one off the side of the bridge, wait a few moments, then drop the other.Question: while both balls are falling, does the distance between them increase, decrease, or remain constant? Give both your reasoning and conclusion, but don't include any calculations.
Assume that air resistance is small enough to be ignored, which means that both balls have the same acceleration as they fall, and terminal velocity need not be considered.
Explanation / Answer
yea, the distance between the two ball will keep on increasing as they fall which is quiet obvious because, when the second ball is dropped its velocity is zero while the 1st ball has a high velocity, and as the vel. of 2nd ball increases the velocity of 1st ball also increases and is always more than 2nd ball any instant of time during flight,if we assume that they never reach terminal velocity so that distance covered by 1st ball is always more than the 2nd ball per unit of time hence the gap between them increases.
