Question
A box weighing 66.0 rests on a table. A rope tied to the box runs vertically upward over a pulley and a weight is hung from the other end.1.) Determine the force that the table exerts on the box if the weight hanging on the other side of the pulley weighs 86.0 .
I thought in order to calculate the force that the table exerts you would just subtract 66.0-86.0 and get -20.0 N which would be the force. Although I entered both -20.0N and +20.0 N into the homework assignment and it wouldn't accept it. Am I missing a step or missing something that I'm forgetting to solve for?
Explanation / Answer
It seems since the weight that is hung from the other end is heavier than the box, the weight would pull the box off of the table. Therefore, the table would not be exerting any force. Try 0 N.
