E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes. They are containers with a battery, heating element and a liquid holding container. The liquid is heated to produce aerosol which can inhaled and exhaled for others to breathe. The liquid contains the addictive drugs like nicotine, flavours, marijuana and other drugs. This is also called vaping.
The conclusions of the report on the safety of ecigarettes are:
1. Exposure to nicotine is not reduced by vaping with e-cigarettes and is more or less the same.
2. Exposure to toxic substances by the burning of the liquid besides nicotine and the drug additive. However, the volume is much lesser than conventional cigarettes.
3. Addiction and dependence on e-cigarettes are much lesser than for conventional cigarettes.
4. e-cigarettes reduces exposure to a number of carcinogens and toxicants which results in reduced health hazards.
5. However, they cause aerosols that the increased effect on passive smokers is more than conventional cigarettes.
6. Effect of e-cigarettes on pregnancy has not been reported like conventional cigarettes.
