Question

A ship sets out to sail to a point 140km due north. An unexpected storm blows the ship to a point 62km due east of its starting point. How fr must it now sail to reach its destination?
____ km
I came up with 153.11 km and WebAssign accepted it...
The second part of the problem is what I'm having trouble with..

In what direction must it now sail to reach its destination? (degrees counterclockwise from east)
... My work is as follows:
Angle A = arctan (140/62) = 66.11 degrees
Bearing = 90 degrees - 66.11 degrees = 23.89 degrees NW.
I tried to follow the work someone else had done to deduce my answer, so I'm not even sure if I worked that second part in the correct manner ... WebAssign marked it wrong.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Explanation / Answer

cos-1(-62/153.11) = 113.9 degrees

its negative since the ship has to travel west, giving it a negative x component using standard notation.
