Question

You are working with a fungus that has a meiocyte that produces an ascus with tour spores, a tetrad This fungal species has more than 6 chromosomes You have a strain that produces black colonies, and you have another stran that grows as alghite colony You hypothesize that this color difference is due to a new allele of a single gene In a stroke of creative genius, you decide to name it white" (w), and you set up experiments to prove your hypothesis that it is an allele of a single gene What would be the color of the colonies if you dissected a tetrad after doing each of these three crosses? (1 point for each cross) FIRST CROSS: w x w SECOND CROSS: wxw THIRD CROSS: wxw What would these crosses toll you about the dominant or recessive nature of the w allole?

Explanation / Answer

As mentioned above, the allele w is for the white phenotype and w+ is for the black phenotype.

Note: Considering the white allele as the dominant one and black as the recessive, the cross between the following pairs will give the following colors.

a) w+ x w = White

b) w x w = White

c) w+ x w+ = Black

As mentioned above the assumptions are made prior based on the naming of the allele as white, that white would be the dominant allele and black would be the recessive allele.
